Historical background

The Institute of Medical Parasitology and Tropical Medicine was set up after the Revolution by a prominent Russian scholar Evgeny Martsinovskiy (1874-1934). A graduate of Moscow University, Dr. Martsinovskiy worked for a while as a physician of the Infections Clinic of Pavlov Hospital (now City Hospital No. 4). During WWI he organised war medic teams who went to the front line to fight infection outbreaks in the troops. Dr. Martsinovskiy served as the Director of the Institute from the year of its foundation in 1920 (when it was known as the Institute of Protozoan Diseases and Chemotherapy) until his death in 1934. The Institute is responsible for eradicating malaria in the USSR, helping significantly decrease the incidence of beef tapeworm infection, ascariasis and trichocephaliasis, and introducing Russian-made antiparasitic medications into the medical practice.

A portrait of German writer Herman Hesse has been literally engraved on the wall of a dilapidated house in Savvinskaya naberezhnaya. The author, Alexandre Farto, a London-based artist originally from Portugal, creates his pictures with the help of a hammer and an electric drill. “Farto’s work is a great example of an unconventional approach to street art. His experience can help young Russian artists motivate themselves for continued development, constant creative searching, trying something new,” said Ivan Panteleev, curator of the Moscow Graffiti Festival. When he came up with this technique, Mr. Farto was met with public bewilderment: creating pictures with a drill, a hammer and a chisel was not a common sight. There are no other buildings in Moscow with graffiti in this technique.

Merkurov became one of the first monument sculptors to receive regular commissions for statues of Lenin and Stalin. He created a large number of these monuments. He is the author of three of the most gigantic statues (a statue in Yerevan (49 metres with the pediment); one at the entrance to Moscow Canal, and one at the All-Union Agricultural Exhibition in Moscow). Art critics of his time reverently mentioned the Assyro-Babylonian grandeur of these behemoth monuments. The statues were all taken down during the Khrushchev Thaw.

Unlike other poets of his age who had turned to realism, Thomas kept his bright, often fantasy-inspired images; in many ways his work had been close to the romantic tradition. His main sources of inspiration were the Welsh folklore and mythology, his childhood memories of rural Wales (his play, entitled “A Child’s Christmas in Wales”) is performed every Christmas eve on the radio to this day. His radio play, entitled “Under Milk Wood”, perhaps the most well-known work by Thomas, is dedicated to life in a small Welsh town.

The earliest of the names this street was known under is Protasyevskiy pereulok, named so after a local landlord. In the 16th century it was called Ikonnaya ulitsa (Icon Street) for the Office of Isography located here (“isography” is “icon painting” in Greek). A community of icon painters lived here. Metropolitan of Moscow and All Russia Fillip had lived here as well. He initiated the construction of a church named after his heavenly patron, Philip the Apostle. When the Metropolitan rose against the brutality of Ivan the Terrible, he was murdered. Fillip was canonised in the mid-16th century. And although Filippovskiy pereulok (Philip Lane) was officially named after the church, people had always associated the name with the Metropolitan. In 1959 the street was renamed Aksakov pereulok in memory of writer Sergey Timofeevich Aksakov, who had rented an apartment in house No. 9 in this street in 1849-1851. It was there that he had held “Aksakov Saturdays” which were attended by literary figures of Moscow. The name Filippovskiy pereulok (Philip Lane) was returned in 1993.

Historical background Checkpoint picture 729

Simon Bolivar was a major figure in the history of South America. His name is surrounded with an aura of romanticism, heroism and self-sacrifice for the good of his homeland. Simon had played a significant role in the history of most countries on the continent. He headed independence movements in Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Columbia and Venezuela. Bolivar was the ideologist behind the liberation movement, a brilliant speaker and organizer. His military genius, however, needn’t be overestimated. His opponents were mostly untrained guerilla fighters. While he was not a brilliant strategist or tactician, Bolivar had had a very strong spirit, and had always seen all his undertakings to a victorious end.
