Merkurov became one of the first monument sculptors to receive regular commissions for statues of Lenin and Stalin. He created a large number of these monuments. He is the author of three of the most gigantic statues (a statue in Yerevan (49 metres with the pediment); one at the entrance to Moscow Canal, and one at the All-Union Agricultural Exhibition in Moscow). Art critics of his time reverently mentioned the Assyro-Babylonian grandeur of these behemoth monuments. The statues were all taken down during the Khrushchev Thaw.
