The Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Sokolniki (in the north-eastward direction) is the only one in Moscow built with funds donated by the military department of the Russian Empire according to the standard design of a military church. The architect, Engineer Colonel F.M. Verzhbitsky, created a building that could accommodate 1,200 people, which corresponded to the approximate size of a regiment in peacetime. Now the church is part of the patriarchal courtyard at the headquarters of the airborne troops, which is why the adjacent green space has received the unofficial name of "Airborne Troops Garden". Every August 2, large-scale celebrations of the Airborne Troops Day take place in Sokolniki Park.
