`Schuka` and `Schepka`, two higher theatre schools of Moscow, were named after actors Boris Schukin and Mikhail Schepkin. In 1822 Schepkin debuted on stage of Moscow Maly Theatre, and his stage career has been connected with that theatre ever since. His next brilliant performance took place in Saint Petersburg a few years later. Mikhail Zagoskin, the administrator of Moscow theatres, gave Schepkin a job of a declamation teacher in Moscow theatre school of Maly Theatre so he could share his skills with many generations of actors. Mikhail Schepkin participated in two most significant premieres of his century. In 1831 he was the first to play the role of Famusov in Griboedov`s `Woe from Wit`. His role of the Mayor in Nikolay Gogol`s comedy `The Inspector General` became an unexcelled example as well. In 1853 during his only trip abroad he met Alexander Gerzen and later wrote to him: `The slaves are not willing to be free yet. How come you got so proud-spirited to set them free against their will, to become the creator of their happiness... Let the natural principles guide the world`s progress and help this process by developing a good moral sense in human. Sow the idea, but don`t water it with blood`. // Mikhail Schepkin (in the center) playing Famusov

The Armenian khachkar is a memorial stele made of soft tuff or basalt and decorated with carvings of cross or any other pattern. Khachkars were erected for various reasons: as borderline poles, as symbols of promises or gratitude, as gravestones (if so, the decorated side was turned to the west). Every khachkar has a unique pattern. The khachkar craftsmanship is inscribed into the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Besides several thousand cross-stones of Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh, khachkars may be found anywhere where there is an Armeinan community. The oldest Armenian community is located in Jerusalem: first resettlers had appeared there at the end of the 1st century, and three centuries later Armenian churches were being built there. Nowadays the Armenian quarter is the smallest in size and in population (only 200 people) of the four quarters of Old Jerusalem. Khachkars may be given as presents. The khachkar near the eastern facade of Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is a gift given by Armenian Apostolic Church in the year 2000. // Khachkars in the Temple of Garni (Armenia), in the wall of Saint James Cathedral (Jerusalem, Israel) and in ulitsa Volkhonka in Moscow.

In 1884 Vladimir Gilyarovskiy, a famous Moscow newspaper journalist and writer, together with his wife Mariya Murzina moved into the house number 24 in 2-ya Meschanskaya street. He changed several residences afterwards, but, strangely, it was 2-ya Meschanskaya street which was later renamed in his memory. In Gilyarovskiy`s days it was one of the four Meschanskaya streets. The present-day Prospekt Mira was 1-ya Meschanskaya, Ulitsa Gilyarovskogo was 2-ya Meschanskaya, Ulitsa Schepkina was 3-ya Meschanskaya. 4-ya Meschanskaya has no number now, it is just Meschanskaya Ulitsa, in memory of Meschanskaya sloboda. The sloboda got its name from the Polish word `mieszczanin`, which means `city dweller`. The word has walked into Russian language and Moscow history together with resettlers from towns and villages touched by Russian-Polish wars of the 17th century. Those civilians and prisoners of war were settled right in this sloboda, which was established in 1670 outside the Sretenskiye vorota.

Историческая справка

For many years people have been bringing animals that need treatment into this cozy mansion.
In the early 20th century the veterinary clinic was located a short way off, in the lanes near Trubnaya ploschad. The owners used to tie their horses, cows and goats right in the yard of the animal clinic. Later it became the veterinary station of Sverdlovskiy and Frunzenskiy districts, and in 1970s it moved to this mansion in Tsvetnoy boulevard. In 1982 Sergey Sereda, a young veterinarian, was appointed as the head physician of the clinic. In addition he worked as a vet in the nearby Old Moscow Circus. The 20-year-old original mosaic decorating the mansion facades is an additional reference to the clinic`s relations with the Old Circus.

Initially the Sukharev market was a place to sell stuff plundered during the 1812 Fire of Moscow. After the October Revolution the Sukharev market became a fencing ken for black marketeers, workers who stole supplies from factories, ex-merchants, bagmen, who were exchanging everything for everything. Even Lenin`s personal decree to close out the Sukharev market did not help, partly due to New Economic Policy. The project of turning this wild place into a centralized New Sukharev market was assigned to an architect Konstantin Melnikov, who was then designing a sarcophagus for Lenin`s body. Melnikov`s ground plan of the market was then used all over during the Perestroika and 1990s. Each kiosk stood slightly at an angle to the aisle allowing for the comfortable space to do shopping without getting in the way of the people passing by (Melnikov`s classic saw-like scheme). Rows consisting of double blocks of kiosks surrounded the central building, which you see on the checkpoint. // Ground plan of the New Sukharev market

In the late 19th century Moscow was no longer a patriarchal capital but a relatively liberal city. More than one hundred houses with red doors and cheap brothels were located in the very historical center. Trubnaya was the geographical epicenter of Moscow`s red light quarter. You are now near one of the most prestigious bordellos of those days, known as The house with pregnant caryatids. Here any building could be partly occupied by ordinary muscovites and partly have an ill repute. The nearby Sretenskiy police department established a medical committee, and it was obligatory for Red light quarter workers to visit a doctor every two weeks. A funny nuance is to discover a Brezhnev-epoch sculpture depicting a family right in the heart of this district.

You are now near the Miusskaya substation for city railway. This building was constructed in 1904 in pseudo-gothic style common to the industrial architecture of the early 20th century. Regardless of its remarkable age, the substation is still doing its job: it provides power for a tram line in Lesnaya ulitsa and all trolleybus lines around the former Fourth trolleybus park. The ground floor of the substation houses the machine department, the two upper floors are used by the personnel. The interiors of the building are being adapted for modern technical requirements. Isn`t it symbolic to find an electric bus charging station near this historical place? It brings to memory the means of transport that were used by muscovites only a century ago.

"The challenge for a tram conductor was to pass an examination in good knowledge of Moscow. One had to know all Moscow squares, streets and lanes, all theatres, railway stations, churches and markets. Not only was he supposed to know their names, but to also be able to explain how to get there. Only Moscow coachmen could compete with tram conductors in this matter. The brilliant knowledge of Moscow is the basis of a tram conductor`s work. A tram conductor is not just a living check-taking device, but a guide through Moscow. The city is enormous. Even locals don’t know it fully. Imagine the confusion of an alien, if no one helps him to figure out this network of dead ends, outposts and churches". This is an extract from the "Book about Life" written by Konstantin Paustovskiy. Starting 1912 he worked as a tram driver and conductor right here, in Miusskoye former tram depot.

You can see a long red building of The Sphere Theatre near this checkpoint. The building`s ordinary shape looks like everything but a sphere, but this is a false impression. It is quite an unusual theatre with an original creative approach to the organization of the theatre troupe. Its idea, put forth by an actress Ekaterina Elanskaya, is as follows: `We reject the theatre as a cube with an invisible wall and prying. We state the principle of communication`. It explains the rare amphitheatre-shaped auditorium of the theatre, which was projected by Elanskaya together with the artist Vladimir Soldatov and the architect Natalya Golas. A theatre is no more a show, it`s the interaction of actors and spectators united in a circle. It was Vsevolod Meyerkhold`s old idea to unite the auditorium and the stage - and it was brought to reality in 1981 with the opening of Sphere theatre in Hermitage garden.

The territory of Novoslobodskiy park has been through luxury, calm and scary times. At the end of the 18th century there was the mansion of Nadezhda Shepeleva — a rich widow of a privy councillor in deed, then the German Club and Tivoli garden, nuns` residence, and the Monastery of the Consolation of All Sorrows starting late 1890s. The monastery cemetery appeared as well, and till its closing in 1930s more than 2000 people had been buried there, e.g. Fyodor Shalyapin`s son Igor, circus artist Anatoliy Durov, lawyer Fyodor Plevako. The monastery was shut down in 1918, and in 1929 only the Church of All-Merciful Saviour Sorrow avoided the demolition. Its prior was sentenced to 5 years in forced-labor camps. The territory of the destroyed cemetery became Children`s park №1, later - Zuevskiy park. A summer stage was built on the ruins of Three Saints church. From 1976 the Church of All-Merciful Saviour Sorrow belonged to Moscow State Technological University (Stankin) and was used for university needs, and only the reaction of experts prevented the destruction of the church again in 1979. Nowadays, during the rebuilding and improvement of Novoslobodskiy park, many archeological finds related mostly to the monastery influence the new planning and landscaping.// The cathedral of the monastery

Историческая справка

The Settlement movement was founded in England in 1884 and spread to America. It united sections, unions, communities to support poor families, to care for their physical and moral well-being, to educate children and to establish interaction between various segments of society. In 1906 an educator Stanislav Shatskiy and an architect Alexander Zelenko launched the similar institution in Russia based on the experience they had gained in America. The children`s Settlement club projected by Zelenko was built in 1906-1907 on manufacturers` donations and included classes, workshops, a theater, cinema and an observatory. It was children themselves who were planning the educational process and setting rules. The institution was closed by the government due to socialist activities (it mainly referred to children`s self-management ideas). Zelenko and Shatskiy were arrested, then released. Shatskiy was only let to establish the kindergarden and the elementary school, locksmith, carpenter and sewing workshops in the same building in Vadkovskiy pereulok. In a few years only an astronomic class was left. In late 1940s the building became the House of Pioneers.
