Initially the Sukharev market was a place to sell stuff plundered during the 1812 Fire of Moscow. After the October Revolution the Sukharev market became a fencing ken for black marketeers, workers who stole supplies from factories, ex-merchants, bagmen, who were exchanging everything for everything. Even Lenin`s personal decree to close out the Sukharev market did not help, partly due to New Economic Policy. The project of turning this wild place into a centralized New Sukharev market was assigned to an architect Konstantin Melnikov, who was then designing a sarcophagus for Lenin`s body. Melnikov`s ground plan of the market was then used all over during the Perestroika and 1990s. Each kiosk stood slightly at an angle to the aisle allowing for the comfortable space to do shopping without getting in the way of the people passing by (Melnikov`s classic saw-like scheme). Rows consisting of double blocks of kiosks surrounded the central building, which you see on the checkpoint. // Ground plan of the New Sukharev market
