One of the most famous soviet pilots Valery Chkalov died on December 15, 1938 during the first test flight on an I-180 aircraft (Nickolay Polikarpov). The flight mission ordered to make "the first flight without retraction of the landing gear with speed limitation... on the route Central airfield, at an altitude of 600 meters. There was a frost of about -25 degrees and the poorly engineered plane failed to accomplish the mission and crash landed. Despite the obvious evidence of serious technical gaps, there were rumours, that the Chkalov catastrophe near the Khodynka Airfield had been staged.
