Историческая справка
The first cathedral of Peter and Paul was built here, near the Moskva river`s steep bank in 1272 by the order of Knyaz
Daniil Moskovskiy. In the years of Mongol invasion, the Orthodox eparchy was established in Sarai-Batu, the capital of Golden
Horde. Probably, the khan showed his respect and did not ban religious rituals of an alien faith. The podvorye became a
temporary shelter for bishops of Saraisky and Podonsky eparchies. It stood on important trade routes to Kolomna and Ryazan.
Later, when the power of Tatars reduced, Krutitsy became a permanent residence of the bishops Sarskiy and Podonskiy. The first
Krutitskiy bishop was the Reverend Vassian. In 17th century with the establishment of patriarchs in Russia the Bishop Sarskiy and
Podonskiy got the rank of Metropolitain. His final resting place was in Krutitskoye podvorye, in the crypt under a building of
today`s Sunday school.
