Mat Maryam cathedral, which means "The cathedral of Virgin Mary", was designed by the architect A. Pavlovskiy in 1998. In the mid-1990s Vyacheslav Ilyushin, a chairman of Moscow Assyrian community, got an abandoned house with half-demolished
walls. And decided to build an original cathedral, unseen before in Russia. He visited Baghdad to see Assyrian architecture, and
with the community`s help he created a true miracle near Dubrovka metro station. Compared to familiar panel houses, the red-brick cathedral-fortress looks like a picture from the Encyclopedia of Ancient World. The plainness of the interior adds to modesty and sacredness. Father Samano, today`s head of the parish, does a lot to engage the youth of the area. Along with the Sunday
school with Assyrian language classes, the church offers meetings, lectures, conferences on national topics, and sometimes - tours of the church. "Let us remember we are all brothers", - says father Samano to begin the excursion.
