Aleksey Bahrushin (1865-1929), Russian entrepreneur, theatre enthusiast, philantropist and collector, was born in Moscow. The future expert on theatrical antiquity, from the age of 6 Aleksey became a habitue of the Bolshoy Theatre, later an admirer of the Maliy Theatre troupe, and also tried acting on stage with the Perlovskiy theatre group. After graduation he was successfully involved in the family business - "Association of Leather and Cloth Manufactury Bahrushin and sons". He gradually retired after discovering the hobby of his life. "Collector friends of his cousin influenced him powerfully: he surely decided to collect, no matter what, why, how, but to collect - analyze and create a serious interest in life", - wrote his son, Yury Alekseevich. On "Bahrushin`s Saturdays" his Moscow home hosted the prominent art figures: Ermolova, Nemirovich-Danchenko, Stanislavskiy, Sobinov, Chaliapin... With their help Bahrushin gathered the country`s greatest collection on the history of Russian and western-european theatres. In 1884 Bahrushin opened the private theatre and literature museum, and in 1913 gave its 12000 showpieces as a gift to Russian Academy of Arts.
