Starting from 16 April, 1887 the embankment was called Polyustrovskaya naberezhnaya (Palyustrovskaya in the original spelling) after the village of Polyustrovo, and went from Arsenalnaya ulitsa to the present-day Piskaryovsky prospekt. It was named after Chairman of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee Ya. Sverdlov in 1925. The embankment was extended several times, in 1958, 1971, and 1984. Its present length was completed in 2007, after Malookhtinskaya naberezhnaya appeared on the city map absorbing a part Sverdlovskaya naberezhnaya from the Okhta river to Krasnogvardeyskaya ploshchad. Sverdlovskaya naberezhnaya is one of the busiest thoroughfares in the city. The section between Piskaryovsky prospekt and Malookhtinsky most (Malaya Okhta bridge) has two pedestrian overpasses built parallel to the roadway.
