The first monument appeared on this site in 1911, the sculpture was made according to the sketches by the architect M. Ginzburg and installed in the public garden by the Church of the Holy Spirit, later demolished. The modern-day monument was recreated according to the drawings made of the original sculpture. It was commissioned to the architect V. Obukhov, and its grand opening was held in May 2003 during the celebration of the 300th anniversary of St. Petersburg.
