“Poltava” is a Russian fourth-rate 54-gun sailing battleship heaved off on 15 (26) June, 1712 from the staple of the St. Petersburg Admiralty. Peter I was personally involved in the construction process. The ship received her name in honour of the victory of the Russian army over the Swedes at the battle of Poltava, and became the first battleship built at the St. Petersburg Admiralty. During the years of her service, from 1712 to 1732, “Poltava” belonged to the Baltic Fleet, and by the end of the Great Northern War had taken part in six marine campaigns (1713-1717 and 1721). During her war service the ship carried the flag of Peter I. In 1732 battleship “Poltava” was disassembled as being unfit for active duty. After her service time came to an end the name “Poltava” was transferred from one ship to another 7 more times. On 6 March, 2015 a monument to “Poltava” was opened in Voskresenskaya naberezhnaya. The monument was commissioned to the sculptor Aleksandr Taratynov and the architect Valery Lukin.
