Historical background
The Lady of Guadalupe Church closed in 1991 after membership declined, and it became an English school for Chinese-speaking children. The building received designation as a historical landmark, so the exterior cannot be altered. But the interior is fair game. So it was bought by a russian investor for $7 million and after 3 years & another $10M worth of renovations it reopened in 2017 as Hack temple, an event center and startup accelerator. Hack Temple hosted events like TEDx, Daybreaker and "Twerk du Soleil" themed rave. In 2019, the building was for sale again, a year later the price dropped almost twice and the building is apparently still on market in 2021 for 7.5$ million.
