Two stories of one monument Seven Girls:
1. “The people keep in their memory an old legend about seven Bashkir girls. They were said to be very beautiful and nobody could tell one from another, they were alike in faces, and stature and manners. And among their friends they were the best at work, singing and dancing. Once their home was attacked by enemies. All men were killed, the most beautiful girls were captured and taken away. Among them there were the seven sisters. They were guarded vigilantly day and night. To prevent them from running away their soles were cut open, and chaffed horsehair was put inside. The soles would heal. The girls would be able to walk slowly but it would be impossible for the prisoners to escape because of the severe pain. But the sovereign beauties could not live with captivity! In the dead of a night they ran away in the Bashkir steppe. The enemies found out about the escape and rode their horses to chase after the girls. They almost caught them... But the rebellious girls joined hands with one another and in despair entered into a lake. They disappeared in the deep of the lake but they remained free forever! And on the instant there flashed seven bright stars in the night sky “Etegyan Yondoz” (“Ursa Major”).
2. “Once upon a time there lived a man. He had seven daughters, brave and beautiful girls. They kept together all the time and everywhere. Nobody was indifferent to them, everybody was amazed by their beauty. Once while walking along the slope of a mountain the girls met the king of divs (evil creature, shaitan). Without a moment’s hesitation they made for the top of the mountain. The div followed them. It seemed he would catch them any minute. But the girls made a desperate jump upwards and rose to the sky. To keep together they stood close to each other. Thus, the girls started to shine as seven stars. Since that time they have been called “Etegyan Yondoz” that means Ursa Major.
Our time: The height of each figure is 2.20 m. The dancing girls are quite heavy, each of them weighs 600–700 kg of bronze casting. The material and the technology of casting are very expensive, the cost of making each girl is approximately 2-7 million rubles. All seven sculptures were created during 6 months, each took less than one month of work.
Three girls from the folk music ensemble “Miras” posed for the sculptor. The costumes for the girls were borrowed from the dancers of the folk dance ensemble named after F. Gaskarov who perform “Seven Girls” dance.
The fountain works daily in the following time schedule: four times a day there is music background and the big screen shows the dance “Seven Girls” performed by the folk dance ensemble named after F. Gaskarov as well as the footage of the nature of Bashkortostan. Music is switched on at 13:15, 19:00, 21:00 and 23:00. At 21:00 and 23:00 decorative illumination is also on and it colours the fountain in rainbow colours.
The musical performance lasts 32 minutes. It starts with the melody to the dance “Seven Girls” in the original version. One can also hear Bashkir folk music adapted by modern composers, melodies from modern Bashkir plays (e.g. “The Last from the Geines” by A. Idelbayev), music by Ural Idelbayev, Rim Khasanov and other Bashkir composers. The half-hour performance includes 6-7 melodies.
