Историческая справка
You have probably already heard about the Rallet and Dutfois factory, about crystal bottles and tableware, and how Chanel No. 5 has something to do with it all. And today we are going to tell you about the post-crystal life of this enterprise.
Kalinin Crystal Factory, later AO “Perfumeflacon”, also known as AOZT “Flacon: Moscow-Paris”, failed to cope with the new economic realities: their state funding stopped, and for some reason crystal dishes went out of fashion. By the beginning of the 2000’s, production stopped altogether.
The company that bought the factory initially planned to demolish everything that was there and build up the territory with residential buildings and office centres, but the crisis of 2008 prevented it. As a result, it was decided to preserve and renovate the factory buildings and repurpose the territory for a creative cluster.
The idea of clustering was that “anchor” tenants or owners would attract others of the same kind, and gradually the site would become a venue for many events, a place of work, leisure, a “city within a city” that has everything you need — shops, workshops, lecture halls, conference rooms, cafes, coworking spaces and so on, while tenants are allowed to creatively transform the space inside and around their premises.
The process of reformatting old factories fascinated its authors so much that later they did nothing else. They called it revitalisation. Many facilities throughout the country have gone through revitalisation process. These include St. Petersburg’s Sevkabel, a former motor vessel turned Valery Bryusov floating casino, Marsakov bakery next door to Flacon, and many other abandoned industrial zones.
