Russian State Agrarian University (Timiryazev Moscow Agricultural Academy) is a Moscow-based higher educational institution specialising in agriculture. It was founded in 1865, when the estate in Petrovsko-Razumovskoye was bought by the state for 250 thousand rubles specifically “for the purpose of establishing an agronomic institute, a farm and other agricultural institutions”.
In 1865, Petrovskoye Agricultural and Forestry Academy and the Forest Experimental Dacha were founded, where various kinds of research were carried out and students underwent practical training.
The founders of the main agrarian university of the country were the director of the Academy, Doctor of Botany Nikolay Ivanovich Zheleznov and Professor of Chemistry, Russian chemical engineer Pavel Antonovich Ilyenkov. Students called their alma mater simply ”Petrovka”.
The Forest Dacha was set up by Count Alfonse Romanovich Vargas de Bedemar (a Dane), a famous Russian forestry scientist, privy councillor and specialist in inventory and forest management. Under him, the forest area was divided into 14 quarters by crosscuts, and studies of the growth and productivity of “stands of the main forest-forming species” began.
In 1872, thanks to the efforts of Kliment Arkadyevich Timiryazev, a Russian naturalist, specialist in plant physiology and one of the first propagandists of Darwin’s ideas in Russia, the country saw appearance of the first vegetation house (model greenhouse), “a physiological experimental station”.
In December 1923, the Council of People’s Commissars of the USSR declared, “Rename Petrovskoye Agricultural Academy into Timiryazev Agricultural Academy.”
In 2017, Russian State Agrarian University (Timiryazev Moscow Agricultural Academy) was recognised as the host organisation of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation for training, continuous professional development and staff retraining in the field of the agro-industrial complex.
