The club of Svoboda perfume factory (Zhirkost Trust) was built in 1927-1931 as part of the club building programme of the chemists’ trade union. It is located in Butyrskaya Sloboda district, and in 1927, a plot was allocated for its construction directly next to the mill on the territory of a public park.
The original project was created in 1927 (“Liberty Cigar”). The shape of the building, a “cistern” or a “cigar” (a cylindrical shape stretched along the street and sandwiched between two rectangular buildings), was an allusion to tank reservoirs used in soap and cosmetics production. The cylinder was cut into two equal parts by a falling wall. One part was equipped with a stage, the other one had a cinema booth and a screen. If necessary, the wall was raised, and the theatre and cinema were combined into one auditorium able to house 1,000 people. Its lower part was supposed to have a swimming pool with bleachers. Above the entrances there were supposed to be openwork towers, and on the lowering wall there were large signs with the club name. The central ellipsoidal part could be associated with a real fountain: at the bottom there was a pool, the walls of which were completely glazed, with waterfalls running down from it.
As a result, the ellipsoid cigar cylinder did not happen due to technical difficulties with the creation of a reinforced concrete frame, the lowering wall did not happen due to the fact that they could not make a reliable lifting mechanism for it, and the pool did not happen due to the banal lack of water supply and sewerage in the area. Undeveloped technologies and utilities could not ensure implementation of the great architect’s ideas.
